The Hoang Lien Mountains are one of the most biologically and ethnically diverse landscapes in Vietnam and the wider Indochinese region. The area is recognised nationally, and internationally as one of the top conservation priority landscapes for northern Vietnam. As a result of rapid rural development and population expansion the natural forest ecosystem of the Hoang Lien has become fragmented and populations of wildlife have been depleted.

Through the implementation of the Community-based Conservation of the Hoang Lien Mountain Ecosystem Project, Fauna & Flora International’s (FFI) Vietnam Programme and the Forest Protection Departments of Lao Cai, Son La and Yen Bai provinces, together with the Hoang Lien National Park, are working to assist local communities in maintaining the biological diversity of the Hoang Lien Mountains.

The project purpose is to demonstrate that collaborative approaches to biodiversity and landscape conservation in the HLS Mountain forest can be sustainable and can improve the livelihoods of people living in the area.
